About Parent Visas
There is no automatic right for family members of Australian residents, to migrate to Australia. The eligibility of family members to migrate to Australia is based on complex eligibility criteria.
Who can apply
Parent visas are accessible to persons seeking a permanent visa on the basis of being the parent of a child who is a settled Australian citizen or permanent resident. The overriding criteria for is the applicant must pass the “Balance of Family Test”.
Balance of Family Test
- This is a test of the numeric disposition and geographical location of the children of the applicant and the applicant’s partner.
- There are other criteria for each subclass of family visa
Choose The Right Visa
Parent; Subclass 103 (Permanent):
- For the parent of an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Waiting time for this visa is 15 years +
Aged Parent; Subclass 804 (Permanent):
- For the aged parent of an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Waiting time for this visa 15 years +
- Must be at least 65 years of age
Contributory Parent; Subclass 143/173 (Permanent & Temporary):
- For the parent of an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Waiting time for this visa 12-24 months; higher visa fee
Contributory Aged Parent; Subclass 864/884 (Permanent & Temporary):
- For the aged parent of an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Must be 65 years +
Aged Dependent Relative; Subclass 114/838:
- Relative must be reliant on an Australian Permanent Resident
- Must be 65 years +
Carer; Subclass 116/836:
- A Carer of a relative who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- The relative being cared for must have a medical condition and require care
Remaining Relative Visas; Subclass 115/835:
- A relative who has no relatives, other than those usually resident in Australia
- Must be sponsored by a brother, sister, parent who is settled in Australia
